This is a digital voltmeter / tester for an electric fence but works slightly differently to others. As well as displaying the voltage going through the fence it also has a setting which simulates animal contact and shows what voltage the animal actually feels.

When testing the power of an electric fence the reading is always of the voltage going through the conductors which is a pretty good indication but is not actually what the animal feels. Depending on the condition of the conductors the voltage going through two fences may be similar but the shock felt by an animal may well be completely different. By simulating the animnal contact this tester gives an accurate voltage reading of what is felt by an animal.

For instance a powerful energiser on a good quaility of tape may have a voltage reading of 7,800v without animal contact and when animal contact is simulated it may still give a reading of 5,200v which is ideal. A fence made up of tape that may have been stretched slightly so the conductors are thinner or has some broken / rusty conductors or tied together in knots may also show a good voltage of 6,200v. Apply the same resistance that animal contact would have and it may show a voltage of less than 2,000v which is ineffective.

Fantastic unit. We were sceptical at first when using them but having tried them on several different fences we were surprised at the actual power differences where we thought they'd be the same.
